The Maimeri Foundation:
The Artist.
Gianni Maimeri (1884 - 1951)
Gianni Maimeri was born in Varano, Italy in 1884 and studied in the great artistic centres of Venice and Milan. The First World War was still being fought during his first exhibit in Milan.
Critics of the time took warmly to Maimeri, saying that he "successfully reflected the rapport between ambience and people without being subject to a mechanical realism, but rather combining reality with emotional intensity."
From the beginning, Maimeri was regarded as one of Italy's most gifted artists and he presented himself as being both a dramatic and a lyrical painter. He aroused critical interest in his work, in which he sought to see clearly "the mystery of light, which is the primary source of vision."
The Maimeri Company.
In 1923, after many years of searching for an oil paint which could fulfill his creative ambitions, Gianni and his brother Carlo, a chemist, took it upon themselves to create a small artist's oil paint business. Today the Maimeri Company is still in family hands. Leone and Gianni (son and grandson) manage the modern plant in Milan where Maimeri artist's oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolours are made.
The Maimeri Foundation.
The primary aim of the Maimeri Foundation is the promotion of culture, in particular the figurative arts and appreciation of all artists, Italian and foreign. The Foundation pursues three policies:
Remembering Gianni Maimeri - The Foundation exhibits the artist's work with the aim of promoting Gianni Maimeri.
Encouraging young artists - The Foundation aims to discover and promote young artists whose talent has yet to make itself known.
Promoting major living Italian artists - The Maimeri Foundation has a series of books on the subject of painters and musicians who have contributed to the intense dialogue between these two arts. Gianni Maimeri's works were often inspired by the concerts he attended at La Scala in Milan.
